Selection process for the 2024 Great Britain Wushu Team

Selection process for the 2024 Great Britain Wushu Team to compete at the European Wushu Championships (modern) in Stockholm, Sweden 2nd to 5th May 

The first WKFE European Wushu Championships will be held in Stockholm, Sweden from 2nd to 5th May 2024. 

The competition will feature both senior and junior (modern) taolu events. IWUF group A and group B scoring will be used for all events. 

No degree of difficulty scoring will be employed at the competition and consequently it won’t be in the selection process. 

This document outlines the requirements to be considered for selection onto the 2024 Great Britain Wushu (taolu) team. 

 Basic requirements 

The selection process will take place at Allestree Woodlands Gym in Derby from 10am to 4pm. 

Athletes are required to wear competition silks and leather taolu shoes when performing routines. All weapons must be IWUF regulation length. 

Athletes must compete in three individual routines (open hand, short weapon and long weapon) to be considered for selection, but only two individual routines are required for Taiji and Junior Category C athletes. 

Athletes with a minimum score of 9.0 in two individual routines (not averaged) will be offered a place on the team. 

All athletes must be a paid member of a BCCMA member association to enter. 

Athletes must be a UK passport holder. 

 AGE REQUIREMENTS – ADULTS 

There is no upper age limit for adult Taolu athletes (18 years old and above). 

 AGE REQUIREMENTS – JUNIORS 

  • Taolu Junior Category C: years of birth: 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016
  • Taolu Junior Category B: years of birth: 2010, 2011, 2012
  • Taolu Junior Category A: years of birth: 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009

Athletes from the lower age categories can participate in the higher age categories (not vice versa). 

It also applies to the adult category (18 years old and above). 

 TAOLU EVENTS – ADULTS 

Each athlete may enter a maximum of four (4) of the following Taolu events: 

  • One (1) bare hand routine: Changquan, Taijiquan, Nanquan
  • One (1) short weapon routine: Daoshu, Jianshu, Nandao, Taijijian
  • One (1) long weapon routine: Gunshu, Qiangshu, Nangun
  • One (1) choreographed sparring routine (Duilian).

Each Team may enter at most one (1) Duilian event total. Duilian events are divided into 

male and female categories. Mixed-sex Duilian are not allowed. 

 TAOLU EVENTS – JUNIORS 

Each athlete may enter a maximum four (4) of the following Taolu events: 

  • Taolu Junior Category C: years of birth: 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016: Elementary Routines No. 3:

Changquan, Daoshu, Jianshu, Gunshu, Qiangshu, Nanquan, Nandao, Nangun. 

  • Taolu Junior Category B: years of birth: 2010, 2011, 2012: 1st Set of International Wushu

Competition Routines: Changquan, Daoshu, Jianshu, Gunshu, Qiangshu, Nanquan, Nandao, 

Nangun, 42 Taijiquan, 42 Taijijian, 24 Taijiquan, 32 Taijijian. 

  • Taolu Junior Category A: years of birth: 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009: 1st or 3rd Set of

International Wushu Competition Routines:, Changquan, Daoshu, Jianshu, Gunshu, 

Qiangshu, Nanquan, Nandao, Nangun, Taijiquan (42 Movements or 3rd Set), Taijijian (42 

Movements or 3rd set), Taijishan, optional Duilian. 

 RULES 

Unless otherwise stated within these regulations, the competition will be conducted in 

accordance with the: 

  • IWUF Wushu Taolu Competition Rules & Judging Methods (Excerpt) 2019

For all Taolu events, The Scoring Method and Criteria for Events Without Degree of Difficulty 

Competition Rules & Judging Methods will be implemented. 

3.4. MANDATORY TECHNIQUES 

All Optional Taolu athletes are required to execute their optional routine’s relevant 

compulsory/mandatory techniques, and failure to do so will result in deductions as stipulated in the 

Rules. Please refer to Chapter 5 of the 2019 Draft IWUF Wushu Taolu rules for this information. 

ROUTINE TIME LIMITS 

Adults: 

  • Changquan, Jianshu, Daoshu, Qiangshu, Gunshu, Nanquan, Nandao, Nangun Routines: no less

than one (1) minute and twenty (20) seconds (1min. 20s). 

  • Duilian Routines: no less than 50 seconds.

Juniors: 

  • Changquan, Jianshu, Daoshu, Qiangshu, Gunshu, Nanquan, Nandao, Nangun Routine: No less

than one (1) minute and ten (10) seconds (1min 10s). 

  • Taijiquan, Taijijian, Taijishan Routine: 3 – 4 minutes.
  • Taijiquan (24/42 movements) Routine: 5 – 6 minutes.
  • Taijijian (42 movements) Routine: 4-5 minutes.
  • Duilian Routine: no less than 40 seconds.
  • There is no time requirement for Elementary Routines.

 How do I register for the selection event? 

All athletes wishing to enter the selection process on 25/02/24 must send an email to mike.donoghue@bccma.com on or before 17/02/24. Each email received will be replied to by a separate email confirming acceptance. The email subject should be: 2024 Great Britain Wushu Team selections 

The email body must contain: 

  • Member name 
  • BCCMA member number 
  • Association name 
  • Date of birth 
  • Details of the age category and events the athlete wishes to be considered for selection 

For the avoidance of doubt, athletes may not turn up to the selections on the 25th February without pre-registering beforehand. Only athletes that have pre-registered via email will be considered for selection.
